UP IN SMOKE: SECONDHAND CANNABIS & TOBACCO SMOKE IN PUBLIC SPACES
PRESENTER:
Suzaynn F. Schick, Ph.D

Dr. Schick is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and a member of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education and the Helen Diller Cancer Center. Dr. Schick studies the health effects of human exposure to biomass smoke, with a focus on rapid cardiovascular responses and dermal exposures.
She published some of the first data showing that the respiratory toxicity of secondhand smoke is greater than that of the smoke that smokers inhale and that the chemical compounds in secondhand smoke react to create new, carcinogenic compounds. She is one of the founding researchers in the emerging field of thirdhand smoke research. Her clinical research has shown that very short exposures to secondhand smoke cause vascular dysfunction and nasal congestion. She is currently studying the role of melanin in dermal uptake of nicotine and exposure to cannabis in public places and workplaces.
