This has led to much higher rates of cancer, heart disease, stroke, and death. Today, tobacco is the number one culprit of preventable deaths for Black people in America.

But we can change that fact.

is our country’s leading public health education and advocacy organization taking on Big Tobacco to save Black lives

We have grown our coalition of national and local organizations, traveled across the country to educate communities and build grassroots infrastructure, gotten major pieces of legislation ending the sale of menthol-flavored tobacco products passed in cities, counties, and states across the country, and sued the FDA to act on removing menthol flavored tobacco products from the market nationally.

Our work is making a difference in the lives of millions of African Americans but we are just getting started. We won’t give up our fight until there are no more African Americans who lose their life because of tobacco.

The AMA, National Medical Association (NMA), the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council (AATCLC), and Action on Smoking and Health have recently strengthened their lawsuit, 𝘼𝙛𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝘼𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙏𝙤𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙤 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙡 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙡 𝙚𝙩 𝙖𝙡. 𝙫. 𝙃𝙃𝙎 𝙚𝙩 𝙖𝙡. by adding plaintiffs directly affected by menthol cigarette smoking. Filed earlier this year, the suit demands that the FDA finally issue a final rule to ban these addictive products.

It has been 15 years since Congress instructed the FDA to address the harms of menthol cigarettes “quickly,” and three years since the FDA agreed to ban them. The case, now before a federal court in California, underscores the urgency to protect health and end the harms of menthol once and for all.

California Governor Newsom has signed Assembly Bill (AB) 3218 into law, empowering the state's attorney general to enforce penalties on noncompliant tobacco sellers. Starting January 1, 2025, this law also establishes a list of approved, unflavored tobacco products that can legally be sold in California, strengthening efforts to regulate and protect public health.
